چکیده

The mathematical process Application and Modelling has just been factored into the new mathematics curriculum. Its implication is that even children should now be involved in works of mathematical modelling. Mathematical modelling is deliberated upon in this paper with a view towards supporting the new math curriculum. An example of pupils’ development of a problem representation in this paper shows evidence of their mathematizing towards a real-world solution. The use of model-eliciting activities holds promise in surfacing children’s mathematical thinking and problem-solving processes as well as in helping them move beyond primitive ways of thinking.

Mathematical Modelling as Problem Solving for Children in the Singapore Mathematics Classrooms

The newly revised mathematics curriculum in Singapore has recently factored Applications and Modelling to be part of the teaching and learning of mathematics. Its implication is that even children should now be involved in works of mathematical modelling. However, to be able to implement modelling activities in the primary mathematics classroom, it is at the outset needful for teachers to have ...

How Does the Problem Based Learning Approach Compare to the Model - Eliciting Activity Approach in Mathematics ?

Problem-Based Learning and Model-Eliciting Activities are recommended instructional strategies for teachers in mathematics. The Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach has become quite widespread and it is used in many grade levels and disciplines. Chronologically, Model-Eliciting Activities, written specifically for instruction in mathematics, were developed after the Problem-Based Learning appr...

Measuring mathematics discourse in technology-supported collaborative activities

This paper presents a classroom observation protocol and analysis method that efficiently capture key student and teacher discursive moves. We developed this protocol for use in a study comparing classrooms using Eduinnova, handheld computer-supported collaborative learning software, with classrooms using a popular, non-collaborative software application aimed at the same topic. Analysis of dat...
